DINCHARIYA –HEALTHY ROUTINE IN AYURVEDA

Ayurveda is a study of life. A person can lead his life healthy and productively by following, a regulated lifestyle, which is well explained in Ayurveda under Dinchariya.

Dinchariya, gives us full information about our daily routine. A day is divided into six parts according to Doshas predominance.

  • Kapha Kala - 6AM to 10AM and 6PM to 10PM
  • Pitta Kala – 10AM to 2PM and 10PM to 2AM
  • Vatta Kala – 2PM to 6PM and 2AM to 6AM

Therefore, Dinchariya is an ideal daily routine, recommends good hygiene, moderate exercise, healthy diet, efficient elimination of waste and a positive mental outlook.

Morning
  • Wake up early, advisable between 4AM and 6AM, at least 1-2 hr before sunrise, this is the most rejuvenating and pure time of the day.
  • Don't just jump off your bed, wait a moment or two, take two or three deep breathe, praise your palm and perceive your face in mirror to identify yourself.
  • Rinse mouth, teeth, face, hand, feet and then drink a glass of water.
  • Before dawn is the best time to eliminate body's physical wastes.
  • Brush your teeth and scrape your tongue. Daily self-massage with oil (coconut, mustard or til oil) for 5-10min. The oil massages balance Vata and enhances blood circulation.
  • Take bath with lukewarm water, it purifies sense organs. Wear neat, clean and fresh clothes.

According to your Prakriti , exercise can be performed-Kapha (hard exercise), Pitta (Walking, Swimming), Vata (Yoga). Give some time for spiritual practices like meditation at least for 5 min.

Breakfast
  • Drink 1-2 glass of lukewarm water an hour before meal, helps in proper digestion.
  • Eat balanced healthy breakfast according to your requirement.
  • Take at least 5 min to plan your day.

Noon/Lunch Time
  • Lunch time, 12PM to 1PM. Ayurveda suggest lunch to be the largest meal of the day.
  • Take time to eat food, eat consciously, concentrate on taste and chew food properly at least 30 times.
  • Take short walk to aid digestion, at least 100 steps.

Evening

  • The last meal should be lighter than lunch and should be taken before sunset i.e. around 7PM.
  • Take short walk and then try to sit in Vajarasana for 5-10 min.

Night/Bed time
  • Best time around 10PM.
  • Take a glass of comfortable hot milk, wash your hand, feet and face before going to bed.
  • Good to massage your feet with oil before going to sleep and thanks to supreme power for the whole day then go to sleep.

AYURVEDA AND DIABETES

Diabetes in Ayurveda is defined under Prameha or Madhumeha
The word Prameha is derived from the word Mir Sechane, meaning “Watering” that means dilution of everything in the body not just urine. It is a Tridoshaj Vaydhi, which is divided into 20 types according to Dosha predominance.

  • Kapha – 10 types
  • Pitta – 6 types
  • Vatta – 4 types
  • Juvenile Diabetic

This classification is based on colour and physical character of urine.
Causes of Prameha: Unhealthy lifestyle and consumption of Madhur, Sinagadha, Guru products, excessive tension worry, anxiety, grief, overeating and hereditary factors.
Symptoms of Prameha:

  • Profuse sweating, foul smell of body, Slackness and Lethargy
  • Feeling of something coated on body or heaviness around Hridaya
  • Sensation of coated tongue
  • Affinity towards cold, dryness of mouth, sweet taste
  • Burning sensation in palms and soles, itching around genital organs
  • Slow healing of wound and loss of weight
  • Constant feeling of hunger and thirst

Remedies for Diabetes
Diet modification is the first step to treat Diabetes – Carbohydrate should be in complex form so that it takes time to digest. Protein intake should be less; fat intake should be limited, Consume fresh fruits, vegetables, oranges etc.
Exercise and yoga (2nd step) - Physical exercises along with 45 min of walk is preferable, Yoga Asana like Bhujangasana, Mayurasana, Vajarasana etc
Ayurvedic and Herbal treatment:

  • Panchkarma- Cleaning of body is sometime needed for Diabetic patient
  • Herbs are the important part of treatment:  Neem, Gurmar leaves, Bitter Gourd (Karela), Vijayasar, Dalchini etc are commonly used herbs
  • Home remedies- Amlaki powder, Haldi powder with or without honey taken twice daily.
  • Bitter Gourd or Bitter Lemon juice taken empty stomach
  • Turmeric capsules can be taken
